Who we are

On paths we unknowingly walk,
shaping ways, says and cares
who we are,is never set in stone.

The story take turns and twists,
imprints of people we carry along
On paths we unknowingly walk

Time like a ribbon, ties them all
memories trapped,soft and strong
shaping ways, says and cares

Never too sure, who we might become
never too proud,of what we were;
who we are, is never set in stone.

Hey stranger

Hey stranger,

You made me talk when I was in distress

Maybe I looked as if I could need a word

In this new country, so tired of this cold;

Maybe we both needed to shed some light

On the reasons that brought us to that place,

Both with a mixed feelings about our names and place

He who was dropping his father’s name

Me who picked up my husband’s surname

Both unsure yet happy with the choice

Both strangers , yet bonded for a while.

Hey stranger,

Thank you for the smile.

Today was my first day in Canada and its freezing cold ( nothing new for this country ! ) But it’s every bit of my worst nightmare in terms of nature. And though I used uber for all my commute , I still felt my bones cold and aching by end of the day. But wherever I went , I met some really helpful folks and specially this teacher Alex who talked and talked and as much as I was amazed at his questions , I kind of liked it. I wish I had taken his email id for maybe more talks on history and his travels.

This is inspired by Weekly Smile post. Finally I got the motivation to share about mine this week ( mostly I feel like sharing my joys would catch a bad eye of fate too soon )

Holding to the old …

The new year celebrations are over for likes of me – specifically for the people of my age. The religious calendar followed at my home differs though. It will be on fourteenth that the month of kharmas ( inauspicious days as per Hindu astrological calculations) will be over. January fourteenth marks the accepted and expected end of winters in my part of the country. This will be celebrated by a bonfire , festive dinner menu and passing gifts to the loved ones , prayers to the local gods for new crop etc

January musings

I have never before paid attention to these rituals in the house , except for arranging gifts assigned to me and making sure that essential snacks are ordered online and delivered on the mentioned date. Me and husband will wait for my mother-in-law to prepare the sweets and once it has been offered to the gods , it will be given to the people in the house. This year it’s not much different but I feel compelled to honor the traditions and to know about them more. I have a sudden urge to be a part of the celebrations of my religion and to make them a part of my own life , without feeling like a guest.

This January came with news of moving away from my family and to have a new start in a faraway city. This month just got a completely different meaning for me in terms of new year , new month , new life perhaps. And I seek to know my roots better , before this shift. I wish I had more time to treasure all that I have taken for granted so far.

new chapter begins

the leaves become the roots

new flowers from old ..

Spicy Memories

Certain words fondly nudge
memories of making merry
On a house boat;In the river
Meandering across villages
No more than ten homes big,
serving the best toddy
spiciest fish, scrambled eggs
and noodles.
Simple food by strangers
served with love stay life long.

This is a Quadrille (poem of exact 44 words) as prompted on dVerse and also linked to the Toads .

*Toddy is the south indian name for palm wine created fresh from the coconut palmtreesin villages. It smells pungent but is very delicious.

colorful UNO cards ,
compete with dull grey skies ,
friends having fun.

Egg and bread ,
you and me; best partners;
feeding each other

many unread emails,
sorted into meaningless some folders,
work still remains

my dirty socks
stay glued to the shoes ,
both need wash
